PAST EVENTS

On Tuesday July 28th 2009, our patron, Max Egremont, spoke at the Petworth Festival on the subject of the war poets.  Lord Egremont is spearheading the campaign to buy a major collection of Sassoon papers for the University of Cambridge.

The SSF was one of eight literary societies who collaborated on a concert entitled "Songs of War", which took place on Saturday 25th April 2009, at St James's Church Piccadilly.

On Friday October 17th 2008, SSF President Meg Crane spoke on Sassoon as part of the "Love Matfield" week that was organised to celebrate the village, its life and history.

At the Frome Festival on Thursday 12th July 2007, Helen Wynter and Susan Date gave their own unique interpretation of two poets who lived locally, Sir Henry Newbolt and Siegfried Sassoon, under the title "Newbolt and Sassoon - Known and Unknown".  The event took place in the 18th century Rook Lane Chapel, and was very well attended.

It was great to catch up with members old and new at the Imperial War Museum on Saturday 12th May.  SSF Vice President Dennis Silk talked about the friendship between Sassoon and T. E. Lawrence, and Jeremy Wilson talked about "Lawrence at Sea".  We thank Jeremy for giving us the opportunity to display membership leaflets and introduce ourselves to everyone.

MILITARY CROSS

Sassoon's Military Cross was purchased by the Royal Welch Fusiliers from Sassoon's executors and is now on display at the RWF regimental museum.

The MC was withdrawn from an auction at Christie's, which included other valuable Sassoon memorabilia, including his annotated copy of Robert Graves' "Goodbye to All That" and
a scrapbook that belonged to T E Lawrence.

"IN OUR TIME"

SSF Honorary Patrons Jean Moorcroft Wilson and Max Egremont, along with academic Fran Breardon, took part in Melvyn Bragg's Radio 4 programme, "In Our Time".  The edition about Sassoon was aired on Thursday, June 7th.

ART EXHIBITION - "EVERYONE SANG"

The Francis Kyle Gallery in Maddox Street, London recently invited twenty contemporary painters to create works inspired by Sassoon.  The exhibition ran from November 1st until December 7th 2006.

Those who were unable to get to the exhibition may be interested to hear that the gallery is selling a pack of postcards featuring a selection of work from the exhibition.  The pack is priced at 6.  Contact info@franciskylegallery.com for further information.
