The 2008 match took place on Matfield village green on  Wednesday 23rd July 2008 and culminated in the first-ever win for George Sherston's XI.

Matfield batted first, and ran up an impressive total of 165 for 8 by teatime.  After a slow start, Sherston's XI caught up quickly and passed their target for the loss of only 2 wickets, thanks largely to some superb batting from Edmund Miller and Andrew Chapman.

Derek Underwood presented the trophy to the winning captain, Julian Hill.

Margi Blunden presented the man-of-the-match award, which went to her son, Edmund "Ted" Miller.

The inaugural cricket match between George Sherston's XI and Matfield Cricket Club took place on Wednesday 26th July 2006, at Matfield Green cricket ground.  The recently-extended Jack Wish Pavilion welcomed the visitors, captained by Andrew Pinnell of Heytesbury.  The event  not only complemented the SSF celebrations commemorating the 120th anniversary of the birth of Siegfried Sassoon at Matfield, but also marked the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, at which Sassoon was present.

George Sherston's XI was put together by Bob Miller, with help from his regular side, the P G Wodehouse Gold Bats.   SSF committee member Graham Lampard contributed to a magnificent performance by the team, who came within a whisker of defeating Matfield.  In the end, despite a break in play for a short thunderstorm, the home side's true grit won through, and the match was decided in the final over.

At close of play, an engraved tankard was presented by Jimmy Batten, former British light-heavyweight champion, to SImon Knott, captain of Matfield .   The title of "man of the match" was awarded by the umpires to Andrew Pinnell in recognition of his swashbuckling century.

Special thanks go to HUBBLE & FREEMAN of Maidstone for donating the cricket balls.
